JASON HUBBARD
ONE ON ONE…Jason Hubbard
with David Kasheta

Southern California rock 'n' roll band 20th Century Boys has just unveiled their debut album, collaborating with the renowned Rum Bar Records from Boston for a remarkable creative partnership. This high-energy trio has rolled out an 11-track, power-packed album this month, accompanied by tour support.
This stripped-down three-piece delivers fresh yet strikingly familiar tunes that draw inspiration from glam, power pop, hard soul, and pre-punk pub rock influences from both sides of the Atlantic. As veterans of the Los Angeles music scene, they’ve earned their stripes playing in bands such as The Joneses, The Flamethrowers, Penal Colony, The Vice Principals, The Cornfed Project, and many others.
Band Members include Claude Guecia (bass) and Jeff Moses (vocals, guitar). We sat down with drummer Jason Hubbard.

Thanks for joining us today and taking the time out of your busy schedule to give us a glimpse into the band. How did you hit upon the band name and how does it represent the dynamics of your music?
Actually it is a just a repurposed name from a past project that Jeff and Rocko were involved in however it is fitting because there are bits and pieces of the bands we were influenced by from the 20th century.
How would you best describe your music?
Hard Power Pop.
I love your new album and your collaboration with Rum Bar Records. How did that partnership evolve?
I was well aware of Rum Bar being the drummer for The Cornfed Project who have a prior partnership with them but at the time it was not really a thought on my mind. Then you and I began speaking and you suggested I give it consideration.
Shortly after that Rum Bar shared a link to our Bandcamp for our 5 song EP (teaser for our full album) on Facebook and then that is when I decided to reach out. Several other bands local to us already have relationships with Rum Bar as well and spoke very highly. Geoff Yeaton of Legendary Swagger and Mindi Mendez of The Glimmer Stars also suggested I reach out.

The band has an amazing connection to the Southern California rock scene. What were some of your early influences?
As a band I would say Johnny Thunders, The Ramones, The Clash, 999, The Jam, T Rex, The Dictators, Cheap Trick...I could go on!
What are the plans for the 20th Century Boys for the next 6 months?
Well we have a new member on bass guitar (Claude Guecia) as Mike (Rocko) decided to take a break from music for personal reasons. With that said our plans are gig gig gig! Write write write! 2 new songs already done (one is show ready). Then back to the studio for the 2nd album! No time is being squandered in this project!
How did you get involved with drumming?
My mother and her family were all musicians. When I was but a wee lad in like the 3rd of 4th grade my mother had a drum set in the garage. I never once saw her play it but my Uncle who was close to my age and like a brother to me and living with us at the time would jump on it and jam out beats or play to songs by Con Funk Shun, Earth Wind and Fire and others similar.
I would just sit and watch like a sponge. Then one day when I thought nobody was around I jumped on it and just played some beats except everyone was around and heard me. Since that day it was always encouraged (heavily) to me that I play!

Who are your favorite drummers? Why?
I am not the type of person to have “favorites”. But I do think Bun E. Carlos is the shizzle!

Why?
Amazing drummer who plays with taste.
First album, cassette, or CD purchased? Where? When?
7 inch single was “Chase Me” by Con Funk Shun. 12 inch album was “Double Platinum” by Kiss. Cassette was “Off The Wall” by Michael Jackson. CD I believe was “Pretty Hate Machine” by NIN. All the analog purchases were in the 70s and the CD was in 1989.
Dream band to open for?
I am not picky haha. Just not Rush. Yeah no Rush hahaha.
New or recent bands you’re most excited about?
There is this new band local to us from the Inland Empire in SoCal called Razor Sharp. Think Guida and Cock Sparrer. They are effin rad! My wife and I make it a point to go see them when we can. They have an EP up on the usual streaming sites. Check them out! Friday Night Hooligans and Skin Byrd are great songs of theirs!
Best stereo system you’ve ever had?
Realistic from Radio Shack!! Hahahaha!
First concert attended?
Great White. Mid 80s in Riverside CA at The Arlington Theater.
Most unforgettable concert attended?
First date with my wife during high school. The Ramones at The Palladium in Hollywood. I think 1987? We were kids. I was shy. I did not say one word to her. But The Ramones!!!
Top 5 albums?
I don’t have a top 5 because I am so fickle it would be different tomorrow and who the heck can pick only 5? But I will share with you some albums that I think are amazing (at least they were when I woke up this morning hahaha). This is in random order.
X “Los Angeles”
