JASON HUBBARD

ONE ON ONE…Jason Hubbard

with David Kasheta

Southern California rock 'n' roll band 20th Century Boys has just unveiled their debut album, collaborating with the renowned Rum Bar Records from Boston for a remarkable creative partnership. This high-energy trio has rolled out an 11-track, power-packed album this month, accompanied by tour support.

This stripped-down three-piece delivers fresh yet strikingly familiar tunes that draw inspiration from glam, power pop, hard soul, and pre-punk pub rock influences from both sides of the Atlantic. As veterans of the Los Angeles music scene, they’ve earned their stripes playing in bands such as The Joneses, The Flamethrowers, Penal Colony, The Vice Principals, The Cornfed Project, and many others.

Band Members include Claude Guecia (bass) and Jeff Moses (vocals, guitar). We sat down with drummer Jason Hubbard.

Thanks for joining us today and taking the time out of your busy schedule to give us a glimpse into the band. How did you hit upon the band name and how does it represent the dynamics of your music?

Actually it is a just a repurposed name from a past project that Jeff and Rocko were involved in however it is fitting because there are bits and pieces of the bands we were influenced by from the 20th century.

How would you best describe your music?

Hard Power Pop.

I love your new album and your collaboration with Rum Bar Records. How did that partnership evolve?

I was well aware of Rum Bar being the drummer for The Cornfed Project who have a prior partnership with them but at the time it was not really a thought on my mind. Then you and I began speaking and you suggested I give it consideration.

Shortly after that Rum Bar shared a link to our Bandcamp for our 5 song EP (teaser for our full album) on Facebook and then that is when I decided to reach out. Several other bands local to us already have relationships with Rum Bar as well and spoke very highly. Geoff Yeaton of Legendary Swagger and Mindi Mendez of The Glimmer Stars also suggested I reach out.

The band has an amazing connection to the Southern California rock scene. What were some of your early influences?

As a band I would say Johnny Thunders, The Ramones, The Clash, 999, The Jam, T Rex, The Dictators, Cheap Trick...I could go on!

What are the plans for the 20th Century Boys for the next 6 months?

Well we have a new member on bass guitar (Claude Guecia) as Mike (Rocko) decided to take a break from music for personal reasons. With that said our plans are gig gig gig! Write write write! 2 new songs already done (one is show ready). Then back to the studio for the 2nd album! No time is being squandered in this project!

How did you get involved with drumming?

My mother and her family were all musicians. When I was but a wee lad in like the 3rd of 4th grade my mother had a drum set in the garage. I never once saw her play it but my Uncle who was close to my age and like a brother to me and living with us at the time would jump on it and jam out beats or play to songs by Con Funk Shun, Earth Wind and Fire and others similar.

I would just sit and watch like a sponge. Then one day when I thought nobody was around I jumped on it and just played some beats except everyone was around and heard me. Since that day it was always encouraged (heavily) to me that I play!

Who are your favorite drummers? Why?

I am not the type of person to have “favorites”. But I do think Bun E. Carlos is the shizzle!

Why?

Amazing drummer who plays with taste.

First album, cassette, or CD purchased? Where? When?

7 inch single was “Chase Me” by Con Funk Shun. 12 inch album was “Double Platinum” by Kiss. Cassette was “Off The Wall” by Michael Jackson. CD I believe was “Pretty Hate Machine” by NIN. All the analog purchases were in the 70s and the CD was in 1989.

Dream band to open for?

I am not picky haha. Just not Rush. Yeah no Rush hahaha.

New or recent bands you’re most excited about?

There is this new band local to us from the Inland Empire in SoCal called Razor Sharp. Think Guida and Cock Sparrer. They are effin rad! My wife and I make it a point to go see them when we can. They have an EP up on the usual streaming sites. Check them out! Friday Night Hooligans and Skin Byrd are great songs of theirs!

Best stereo system you’ve ever had?

Realistic from Radio Shack!! Hahahaha!

First concert attended?

Great White. Mid 80s in Riverside CA at The Arlington Theater.

Most unforgettable concert attended?

First date with my wife during high school. The Ramones at The Palladium in Hollywood. I think 1987? We were kids. I was shy. I did not say one word to her. But The Ramones!!!

Top 5 albums?

I don’t have a top 5 because I am so fickle it would be different tomorrow and who the heck can pick only 5? But I will share with you some albums that I think are amazing (at least they were when I woke up this morning hahaha). This is in random order.

X “Los Angeles”

Wire “Pink Flag”

Television “Marquee Moon”

Cock Sparrer “Shock Troops”

999 “The Biggest Prize in Sport”

Cheap Trick “In Color”

The Clash “Self Titled”

Misfits “Static Age”

The Damned “Machine Gun Etiquette”

Adam and The Ants “Kings of the Wild Frontier”

The Jam “In The City”

I could keep going.......

Appreciate you taking the time.  Real excited about the future for the band, the album release and your association with Rum Bar Records. How can listeners convey their appreciation to the band?

Hey everybody! June is going to be heating up in more ways than one, with some incredibly talented bands that will be in the New England area to officially lift us from the winter doldrums. It’s amazing to soak in the creative energy that these groups provide and we’re here to get as many ears (and eyes) on them as humanly possible. June 1 The Wynotts (New World Tavern, Plymouth, MA) 6 The Swansea Sound (Alchemy, Providence, RI) 7 The Swansea Sound (O’Briens, Boston, MA) The Wicked Lo-Down (Fallout Shelter, Norwood, MA) 8 The Chelsea Curve (Midway Cafe, Jamaica Plain, MA) Anderson Council, False Positives, Museum Direktors (Square Root, Roslindale, MA) 14 The Nervous Eaters (Fallout Shelter, Norwood, MA) Barry Goudreau (Music Room, Yarmouth, MA) Jennifer Tefft & The Strange (Fireseed Art Studios, Framingham, MA) 15 The Dogmatics, Girl With A Hawk, Cindy Lawson (Square Root, Roslindale, MA) As always, reach out to your local and favorite bands either by their website, social media accounts or going see them live. Stop by the merch table, say hello and give that band your support. This is my cause, think about making it yours as well! Had the chance recently to interview The Swansea Sound (https://swanseasound.bandcamp.com/album/swansea-sound) and Nicole Laurenne of The Darts ( https://thedartsus.bandcamp.com/album/boomerang ). Incredible catalog and both have very impressive professional careers. Check them out here ( https://www.kashetaproductions.com/blog ) . Big thanks to all those bands, artists, labels and publicists that have submitted their songs to our two syndicated radio shows: Rock Never Rusts and The Boston Tackle Box. I promo all the plays on the socials and strive to be both professional, positive and proactive in assisting them to garner much deserved airplay and promotion. There are a ton of radio stations out there, both FM and internet, and most would and should be interested in what you have to say. Electronic press kits (EPKs) are a great way to communicate to them in a clear, concise and professional way. Always feel free to reach out to us here to get our assistance if it’s something that can efficiently promote your tunes or brand. Thanks again to everyone for all your support of these bands and their songs. Special shout out to all the great radio stations that give their support too, including Eardrum Buzz Radio, Alt Philly Rocks, WOMR, Sole of Indie Radio, WSCR, Alt Radio Rocks, Radio Candy Radio, North of Boston Radio, Pop Radio UK and KOR Radio! Have a great day, stay healthy and hydrate! dk

Spring has officially sprung here in the Northeast U.S., and the only thing that’s growing faster than the weeds in my yard is the slate of gigs popping up in all our favorite clubs! Not much compares to seeing these bands giving it their all on stage and we fans are eternally grateful. I always throw out reminders to support your local bands in whatever way possible. Reaching out on the socials seems to be the easiest way as a word of encouragement has quite an impact. A lot of bands have great websites where you can sit and soak in their creativity and snag the latest or greatest recorded offerings or maybe pull the trigger on that t-shirt purchase. Thanks for your support of “Rock Never Rusts” and “The Boston Tackle Box” radio shows. Your feedback directs me down the best path to support our music scene. There’s a ton of great radio stations and shows that I love. Explore, explore, explore! Not unlike the weeds in my yard, our website, Kasheta Productions, has yet to be fine-tuned to my liking as the platform to discover and support this great music. I’m excited to work closely with a team dedicated to sharpening the approach and vision for the site and will continue to strive to make it the best I can. Details to follow! I want to personally thank the following stations that have taken a chance on me and my goal to try and get as many ears on this great music as possible. Eardrum Buzz Radio and the indefatigable Bret Miller were the first to take a chance on me and that station and its radio presenters opened my eyes to many types of great music not previously familiar. Explore, explore, explore! Thanks and gratitude to Pop Radio UK, KOR, Sole of Indie Radio, WOMR, Alt Radio Rocks, Radio Candy Radio, WSCR, and North of Boston Radio for their platforms that allow us to be one conduit between you and your music. I’m psyched to say there are more stations in the pipeline to increase the surface area of listenership and strengthen the bond that unites us in our love of music. Until then, support your local bands!
